DeAndre Baker wins the coveted Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nation's top defensive back. Baker is the 1st Bulldogs DB to win the Thorpe in UGA's rich history of top defensive backs (Think Champ Bailey). Baker edged LSU CB Greedy Williams and Notre Dame's Julian Love to be named the best DB in the land.
DeAndre Baker and fellow South Florida native true freshman Tyson Campbell (Plantation American Heritage) formed a formidable duo as a top collegiate cornerback tandem. Baker ended his senior campaign by 2 INTS, 10 PBUs, and a FF, in a season where many teams opted to not pass Baker's way.
Baker starred at world renown Miami Northwestern High School, where he was US Army All-American.
Baker, who was recruited by a Mark Richt led Georgia Bulldogs, was the only selection from Georgia to be named first team All-SEC. Baker also was named 1st Team AP All-American.
With a growing trend emerging of players decided to ensure no injury before the draft by not playing a bowl game, Baker has decided to skip the Sugar Bowl to prepare for the next level as a projected 1st round NFL draft pick.
Baker is now part of a cherished list of players from Florida to win the Thorpe award:
2018 Deandre Baker (UGA, Miami Northwestern HS)
2014 Gerod Holliman (Louisville -- 14 INTS, Miami Southridge HS )
1996 Lawrence Wright (UF, North Miami HS)
2010 Patrick Peterson (LSU, Blanche Ely HS)
1988 Deion Sanders (FSU, North Ft. Myers HS)
1987 Bennie Blades (UM, Sunrise Piper HS)
